Dynamic soil structure interaction effects in helical steel pile foundations
ERIES-HELIQUAKE
Dataset Description
Combined static and dynamic full-scale experimental campaign investigating soil-structure interaction in helical steel pile (HSP) foundations, conducted at the EuroSeistest experimental site, Thessaloniki, Greece. The campaign comprised static vertical and horizontal load tests on individual helical piles, and dynamic forced-vibration tests on two 2×2 helical pile groups supporting the EuroProteas prototype structure.
Specimens
1. Specimen 1 – Single isolated helical piles (static testing)
1
Individual HELICA 239×8 single-helix piles (tube 88.9×6 mm, two extensions, single 239 mm helix near tip) and one HELICA 239×8-356×12 two-helix pile (one extension, lower 239 mm helix plus upper 356 mm helix). Piles tested individually: P4 (vertical loading, central pile of inline arrangement P3–P4–P5), P2 (horizontal loading, single-helix), P1 (horizontal loading, two-helix). Pile embedded length 7.30 m, exposed length above ground 0.20 m.
1. Static tests (Specimen 1)
Experiment S1 — static vertical load test; pile P4 (single-helix, central pile of inline arrangement P3–P4–P5, outer piles serving as reaction elements); date 2026-03-12; load phase: 4 steps from 30 to 120 kN, 30 min per step; unload phase: 2 steps, 70 and 20 kN, 10 min per step; reload phase: 10 steps from 30 to 300 kN in 30 kN increments, 30 min per step except the final two steps (27 min, 20 min); total duration 427 min.
Experiment S2 — static horizontal load test; pile P2 (single-helix); date 2026-03-13; load phase: 2 steps, 4.1 and 8.2 kN, 20 min per step; unload phase: 1 step, 4.1 kN, 20 min; reload phase: 5 steps from 4.1 to 20.6 kN, 20 min per step; total duration 160 min.
Experiment S3 — static horizontal load test; pile P1 (two-helix); date 2026-03-13, conducted after Experiment S2; load protocol identical in structure to Experiment S2.
Instrumentation
Mitutoyo digital gauge — measured quantity: displacement; instrument IDs D1, D2; deployed in vertical and horizontal load tests.
Waycon laser displacement sensor — measured quantity: displacement; units: mm; instrument IDs L1–L4; deployed in vertical and horizontal load tests; recording directions: east-west and vertical.
Analogue gauge — measured quantity: displacement; instrument ID A1; deployed in horizontal load tests only.
Data formats: raw and converted; supplementary .xlsx files with digital and analogue gauge readings accompany each recording folder.
Known data gaps: during the horizontal load test on pile P2, sensor L2 produced unreliable data during unloading, and sensors L2 and L4 produced unreliable data during reloading, attributed to insufficient laser beam reflection under intense sunlight.
