Assessment of base-column connections in sub-standard steel frames subjected to biaxial seismic excitations

ERIES-HITBASE

STEEL STRUCTURES

Dataset Description

Test data is provided regarding the seismic performance of existing steel MRFs under bi-directional ground motions - focus is on the behaviour of exposed column-base plate connections subjected to sequentially applied biaxial action effects.

The structure comprises a single-story, one-by-one- bay moment resisting frame to represent existing frames in seismic regions. While such structures are designed (primarily) for gravity loads, thus lacking adequate seismic detailing, their exposed column-base connections are required to sustain the combination of axial, shear and flexural loadings during earthquakes. The tests performed target at providing data for the assessment of

existing steel MRFs under bi-directional ground motions, especially regarding the response of exposed column-base plate connections.

Instrumentation

Accelerometers and high-resolution displacement sensors were employed (see relevant figure).

2. Cyclic tests along specimen axes

The as-built structure was subjected to a series of low-level cyclic tests along its two main axes.

Instrumentation

The instrumentation employed comprised displacement transducers, inclinometers and strain gages. Their position can be identified in the accompanying drawings and sketches.

3. Hybrid simulations

A series of pseudodynamic tests (hybrid simulation) were performed under two seismic records in orthogonal directions scaled at different levels.
