Ice accretion and its effects on the force coefficients of wind turbine airfoils for large Reynolds numbers and angles of attack

Dataset Description
Ice accretion tests were conducted at the CSTB Climatic Wind Tunnel (Nantes, France) for the modified NACA 63-3-620 airfoil. Tests were conducted at different temperatures and angles of attack, obtaining the accreted shape of the airfoil by means of 3D scans. Moreover, the aerodynamic forces acting on the specimen while the accretion was forming were also measured.
The dataset is completed with tests of the clean modified NACA 63-3-620 airfoil, for different angles of attack in ambient conditions, recording simultaneously the aerodynamic forces and pressures. These tests were done in a different wind tunnel within the CSTB facilities.

1. Ice accretion of the modified NACA 63-3-620 airfoil

The purpose of this set of tests was to obtain the shape of the accreted modified NACA 63-3-620 airfoil under different velocities, temperatures and angles of attack, while simultaneously measuring the aerodynamic forces acting on the airfoil. The model has a chord length of 42cm and a length of 1.8m.
1. Snow tests
Snow particles are produced using a mixture of air and water through a snow gun. Eight tests of ice accretion were conducted for different ambient conditions described in the following table. While the accretion was forming the aerodynamic forces were measured. Finally the accreted shape was obtained by means of 3D scans.
Instrumentation
2xHBM MSC 10-005-6C balances for measurement of snow load and wind loads on the model
Two PT100 temperature gauges at both extremities of the setup
One thermos-hygro-barometer for measurement of the parameters of wind tunnel air
1x 3D scan HandyScan 700 (Creaform) for scanning the shape of accreted snow/ice

These tests aim at completing the dataset by providing simultaneous measurements of force and pressure coefficients at ambient conditions for different angles of attack and velocities.

The drag and lift forces, the pitch moment and pressures were simultaneously recorded for wind speeds ranging from 10m/s up to 20m/s in steps of 5m/s, and considering angles of attack from 0º to 13.5º,
Two types of oncoming wind have been used : uniform (smooth, Iu=0.5%) wind and slightly turbulent (Iu=3%) wind with a grid with bar 50mm wide at a step of 200mm located 3m upstream.
